Description	:	JEHU VAN BUSKIRK, Deputy Surveyor and ex-Surveyor, is a native of Henry County, Ind., and was born September 22, 1826. He is the son of Joseph and Abigail (Vickery) Van Buskirk. Our subject engaged in teaching the early part of his life, and was elected to the office of Surveyor of Tipton County by the Democratic party in 1872, and was twice re-elected, serving six successive years. Read More	JEHU VAN BUSKIRK, Deputy Surveyor and ex-Surveyor, is a native of Henry County, Ind., and was born September 22, 1826. He is the son of Joseph and Abigail (Vickery) Van Buskirk. Our subject engaged in teaching the early part of his life, and was elected to the office of Surveyor of Tipton County by the Democratic party in 1872, and was twice re-elected, serving six successive years. He was previously elected in 1856, and served one term, and has also been Deputy Surveyor much of the time since. During the falls of the last four years, Mr. V. has operated a sorghum factory, and does the grinding by steam. He owns a good home of twenty-six acres of fertile land, with eighteen acres under cultivation. He heats his sitting room by register from the cellar below. His barn has a brick basement, and is arranged so that he can drive into the second story. The roof is self-supporting, and the barn has no timbers in the way of storage. Mr. Van Buskirk was married, in June, 1861, to Miss Martha Small, who died about a year after their marriage. In July, 1868, he was married to Elizabeth Carr, of this county. Mr. Van Buskirk has & family of three children-Sallie, Mamie and Cora. About the year 1852, he became a Christian, and about the same time signed a temperance pledge and a tobacco pledge. He has since faithfully kept all his pledges. In the winter of 1855-56, he attended a course of medical lectures in Cincinnati, since which time he has acted as his own physician. Tipton-Henry County IN Archives Biographies.....Van Buskirk, Jehu 1826 - Jehu Van Buskirk, one of the oldest residents of the county died at his home west of the city Saturday at 4:30 o'clock, his death being due to the infirmities of advanced years. The funeral services were arranged for this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Independence Christian church. Burial was at Fairview cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. Mavity of Windfall. The deceased was Hoosier born, being a native of Henry county, having been born September 22, 1826 about six miles southeast of Newcastle, his birthplace being near the famous Flat Rock. The father of Mr. Van Buskirk was Joseph van Buskirk, the original member of the family, coming from Germany. The mother of Jehu was Abigail Vickery, she being a native of Ohio. The parents of Mr. Van Buskirk came to Tipton county in 1843, that being one year before the organization of the county, settling on a farm four miles south of Tipton, on what is now known at the Teal farm. On coming to this county Jehu was seventeen years of age and he labored on the farm with his parents, clearing the ground and getting the land read for cultivation. The elder Van Buskirk was one of the leading spirits of the day and took an active part in all the public movements and in every thing intended for the advancement of the interests of the community. The father of Jehu was twice married, there being children born to each union, all the children being dead at this time with the exception of a sister, Mary Ann Mount. His parents died in 1862. The sister lives in Kansas at this time, being the widow of John Mount, formerly a resident of this county. Jehu was united in marriage in 1862, the wife being Mattie Small, the daughter of a pioneer family of the county. One child was born to then, both mother child dying and their burial was in one grave. His second marriage was to Elizabeth Carr, daughter of Jacob Carr, her death taking place in 1909. Four children were born to them, they being Mrs. William Daum, of Connersville, Mrs. William Schall, of this county, Mrs. Thomas E. Campbell, also of this county, and Oklahoma, at the home place.
