Highland Recorder May 30, 1913 Doe Hill News: The subject of this sketch, Miss Jemima Seybert, was born at the old Seybert home on Strait Creek, March 30, 1837, died May 26, 1913, at 1 a.m., aged 74 years, 1 month, 26 days. She spent the winter with her sister, Mrs. W.A. Jones, and had enjoyed reasonably good health until about four weeks ago, when she became seriously ill and for some time her death was expected, but she rallied and was able to sit up for short periods of time, but Friday grew suddenly worse, and remained in a state of coma until relieved by death. She united with the M.E.C.S. at Strait Creek, July, 1854, having lived a consistent Christian life nearly sixty years. She was the oldest member of the church and Sunday School at that place and a regular attendant. She was a teacher in the Sunday School for many years. The boys and girls of her class are men and women of mature years and widely scattered, who no doubt would bear testimony to her pure christian character, and will be grieved to learn of her death. She was gentle and retiring in disposition, but of strong character. To prove the trust reposed in her we give below an incident of the late war. The valuables in the county clerk's office had been removed to a place of safety, hence there was no place to deposit the revenue of the county. The sheriff, John M. Rexrode, carried it in saddle-bags for a while, but came very near being robbed by Federal soldiers. He made his escape and took it to Miss Seybert's home and entrusted it to her for safekeeping. She concealed and guarded it well during a part of the closing year of the war. Her oldest brother, William Seybert, entered the army in March, 1862, belonged to Company H, 31st Virginia Regiment and was killed in the battle of Winchester at the age of 27 years, 1 month. 14 days. She was a descendant of 1st Lieut. Nicholas Seybert, of the Revolution, Capt. Hull's Co., Col. Pogue's Batallion. One sister, Mrs. W.A. Jones, and one brother, H.H. Seybert, survive her. It will be remembered that not quite a year ago, another sister, Mrs. J.L. Shumate, died very suddenly. She was resigned to the Lord's will. When asked by her sister a few days prior to her death whether she would like to get well, she replied, "I don't care; whatever is best for me is all right." Her remains will be taken to Seybert's Chapel, Strait Creek, tomorrow, and after the funeral service, will be interred in the family cemetery.
