Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Church of the Big Hole in Wisdom. In 1916, when Blackwell and Nettie Lawrence were well on their way to having their nine children raised, they decided their home had grown too quiet. They wanted to adopt a child from the state orphanage in Twin Bridges. They talked of adopting a boy as a companion for their only son, Bart. A boy of about 10 or 12 would be a logical choice as he could also help with the ranch chores, of which there were no shortage. However, once inside the orphanage, so the story goes, Blackwell and Nettie forgot all about logic. A tiny, brown-eyed girl, just over a year old and not yet walking, smiled at Blackwell and reached out to him. He said “we’ll take this one.” Nettie agreed and home they came with another little girl to add to their family. They named her Jennie Lind, after the Swedish singer, famous in the 1800s. Jennie was lucky and so were the Lawrences. Despite having gone through infancy with a minimum of care or attention, Jennie thrived once she came into the Lawrence household. She grew to be a healthy, happy child, well-suited to ranch life. She developed a life-long affinity for animals and the outdoors. She loved to ride horses. Horses were so important to her that she once said her dream for her own children was that they would all have a horse of their own to ride. She was especially close to her sister, Nina, who was 10 years older. The two of them shared a tiny room upstairs, where Nina would read to Jennie at night. Nina’s favorite book was “Shepherd of the Hills,” which she would read over and over again. Long after Jennie was grown, Nina would affectionately refer to her as “Little Sis.” Jennie married Fred Else on May 16, 1936, and moved to a two-room cabin he had built on a place near the timberline, just west of his father’s ranch on the North Fork. They lived a quite, unassuming life there, working to improve their ranch and herd of cattle, adding on to the cabin as they raised their four daughters, Margaret Joyce, Gloria, Donna and Robin. Years later, when asked if she considered it a hardship to have started married life in a small, sod-roofed cabin with no electricity or running water, and very little income, she would answer no, she did not! She said all the young couples they knew were living much the same way. Besides, she had plenty of what she valued most. She had horses and lots of wide open space in which to ride them, neighbors to visit and wildlife right outside the door. Although she always downplayed her accomplishments, Jennie had a wide variety of interests and talents. She could sew, quilt, draw, paint, play the piano by ear and recite poetry and song lyrics from memory. She kept a daily diary, made scrapbooks and took hundreds of pictures with a little box camera. She landscaped the yard with native plants and trees-wild rosebushes, gooseberry bushes, aspens, pines and spruce—all transplanted from nearby. One of her yearly rituals was to look for the first signs of spring. She would happily announce seeing the first pussy willow or the first blackbird or the first gopher. Her enthusiasm was contagious and soon everyone around her was looking for their own signs that winter was indeed over. Soon after, she would take a walk “up on the hill” and pick the first bouquet of spring wildflowers. She and Fred lived their entire married life on the ranch. They never stopped enjoying the simple pleasures of a fishing trip on Tie Creek or a woodcutting excursion “up the gulch” or just watching deer grazing on the hill behind the house. Old age finally caught up with Jennie several years after Fred died, but until then, her life could best summed up in a remark she once made when she was well past 80. When asked why she continued to get up at the crack of dawn every single day when she really did not have to anymore, she replied, “I get up when I wake up because I do not want to miss anything.” Those of us who grew up around her can be thankful for getting to share in her enthusiasm and appreciation for the simple things in life. Jennie was preceded in death by Donna in 1983 and Fred in 1991. Surviving her are daughters, Margaret Joyce, Gloria and Robin. She has 12 grandchildren, Wende Hoblitt, Timothy Kidd, Clinton Kidd, Michael Kidd, Kelly Titeca, Dale Trefren, Geri Coon, Darrell Weaver, Michelle Stoll, Brian Atlas, Eric Murphry and Janine Murphry; 10 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
