A graduate of McMinnville high school this year, Thomson was home on leave after finishing an initial training period at Memphis, Tenn., as a naval air crewman. While on a hunting trip with two other McMinnville youths, James Apperson and Claude Engle, Thomson was pulling his gun toward him in preparation for getting out of the convertible when the shot went off. Thomson was taken to a hospital immediately, where he died within a few minutes. At school, Thomson took part in football, basketball, baseball, and tennis. He was a member of the lettermen's club, on the student council, and on the yearbook staff. After funeral services at the Macy chapel Tuesday morning, the body was shipped to Platt, S.D., for burial. A sister, Mrs. Melvin Phelps, left McMinnville for Platt Tuesday. The youth's mother, Mrs. Beulah Thompson, was visiting in California at the time of the accident. She and her daughter, Mrs. Gordan Grimm of Compton, Calif., planned to travel directly to Platt for graveside services. A brother, Donald, is serving in the Philippines, while another brother, Kenneth, a lieutenant in the army air force, was recently reported missing in the China-Burma-India theatre.
