Hofer, age 78, of 1963 Ohio SW, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Jerane Ross Hofer was born September 16, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan to Jacob Emil Hofer and Mary H. Hofer. As a young boy he lived on a farm located southwest of Carpenter, South Dakota. In 1936, he moved with his family to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While living in Milwaukee, Jerane often rode the train back to South Dakota to spend summers with his relatives there. Finally, in 1946 the family returned to farm near Yale, South Dakota. Jerane accepted Christ as his Savior during revival meetings held at Bethel Church. He was a member of Bethesda Church since its early days in north Huron. He served in various roles such as treasurer, deacon, building committee member, song leader, and Sunday School teacher. He was a strong supporter of James Valley Christian School, Sunshine Bible Academy, and Byron Bible Camp. He graduated from Huron High School in 1948. Jerane enlisted in the Navy in January of 1951 and served until November 1954. After returning to South Dakota, he attended South Dakota State University for a year; then began working at Armour's Meat Packing Company where he worked for thirty years. While working at Armour's he also enjoyed farming and raising cattle on weekends and evenings, working with his mother and brother Russell. After retiring from Armour's he farmed his own land and worked for neighboring farmers. In 1959 he married Pearl Waldner of Carpenter, South Dakota. Together they enjoyed raising three children and five granddaughters. They loved to visit their children and follow the events of each. One of Jerane's favorite things was going camping with his family, especially the annual trip to the Black Hills. He liked to golf and taught his three children to play. Motorcycling was a hobby that Jerane and Pearl began after their children were grown. Together they enjoyed going to various high school basketball games and track meets. One of his favorite things to do was spend time working at the farm. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Russell, Floyd, and Gordon. Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Pearl; three children, Lisa Hofer, of Brookings, Lori (Gary) Wilken of Meadow, and Wade Hofer of Meadow; five granddaughters, Ann, Katie, Tricia, Susan, and Lindsey Wilken; one aunt, Elma Dillman of Wausau, Wisconsin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. His funeral service will be Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Bethesda Church with the Rev. Phil Plett officiating. Burial will in the Ideal Cemetery. Arrangements by Kuhler Funeral Home.
