With the family went a large rooster, and according to the colonel that rooster was - not it was - an intelligent ruler in the barnyard. "Why, sir, that rooster was educated. He could_______________" "Where is this wonderful bird, colonel?" "Alas, he is no more. A clergyman from New Vienna called at our house and announced that he would remain for dinner. And with the salty tears irrigating his handsome cheeks, his chest cracking in agony and his frame bent as if in pain, the colonel tottered to the door and passed into the street, leaving the newspaper man to ponder long and earnestly on the uncertainty of a rooster's life after a clergyman announced that he will remain for dinner. "New Vienna Reporter" The family tells the story that Jerry was an auctioneer. He would call an auction and sometimes in-between he would sing or have his daughter get up and sing. Jerry was a big fellow and had a deep voice. He would play Santa Claus at Christmas time in Hillsboro.
