Description	:	J. J. DeLay, chairman of the board and founder of the DeLay First National Bank in Norfolk, died about 3 a.m. Saturday in a Norfolk hospital. He had been a patient since September 24. He observed his 87th birthday anniversary on Oct. 11. Funeral services will be held Tuesday with burial in Prospect Hill cemetery. He had been in the banking business for 65 years. He was born Oct. 11, 1883 to Mr. and Mrs. Robert DeLay at Monticello, Iowa. "He enrolled in the college at Wayne, then a private institution, and walked 12 miles home on Friday night and the same 12 miles back on Sunday afternoon." He started his banking job as assistant cashier at a bank in Dixon in May, 1905. "His $15 per month did not permit renting a room so bank officials let him sleep in the back of the bank for several years. Once in Dixon, burglars paid a midnight visit but he welcomed one of them with a shot in the leg. The man was not killed and no money was stolen. Mr. DeLay left the Dixon State Bank in 1908 and went to Corn Exchannge National Bank in Omaha, where he worked until 1910. He then moved to Pierre, S.D., where he did special work for the state banking department annd in 1911, became cashier at the Hudson, S. D., State Bank. In 1916, he went to Sioux City, Iowa, where he did special bank work and in 1917, organized his first bank at Beresford, S. D. Other banks he had organized included: Security National Bank at Laurel, 1928; DeLay First National Bank of Norfolk, 1930; Bank of Leigh, 1935; Bank of Madison, 1937; Bank of Downers Grove, Ill., 1955; Huron Valley Nnational Bank at Ann Arbor, Mich., 1963. He also organized the Bank of Elgin annd was still a director. He was also still chairman of the board of the Bank of Madison. He was recently reelected president of Norfolk Livestock Market Inc. Coming to Norfolk a year after the 1929 crash, J. J. organized the State Bank of Norfolk Dec. 20, 1930. A year later he nationalized and changed the name to DeLay National Bank. The bank was first located in temporary quarters where the office is now and moved to 401 Norfolk Ave., six months later. The bank was extensively remodeled, redecorated and enlarged about four years ago. Asked why he chose to come to Norfolk rather than Rapid City, S. D., Spencer, Iowa, or Kearney which he had also considered, J. J. said, 'Because it was close to where I lived many years of my life and in 1930 Norfolk needed a bank.' One of the exciting incidents of early years of the local bank was the November, 1934, robbery in which three men held several persons associated with the bank as hostages during the night before the theft and escaped with $22, 850. One of the men was killed a few months later at an attempted bank holdup in southern Nebraska and the other two were captured three years later. One received 40 years in the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kan., and the other, sentenced to 40 years at Alcatraz, was later shot and killed in an escape attempt." He was survived by his wife, Dixie; 6 sons: Harold J. at St. Paul, Minnesota; Bernard M. at Norfolk, John F. at Gainesville, Virginia; Jay at Ann Arbor, Michigan; Eugene E. at Oakland, California; Paul R. at Pebble Beach, California; 1 brother John A. at Wessington Springs, South Dakota; 2 sisters: Mrs. Harry F. Freas at Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mrs. Clarence Harrigan at Glendale, California; 18 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters, 1 brother.
