Jerry worked for Winn Dixie Stores from about 1955 until about 1997 full time. He had a 42 year successful career. He started as a part time employee while still in high school and went full time after graduation. He had many jobs during those 42 years. He was a stock clerk, head stock clerk, assistant store manager and store manager. He managed stores in Mooresville, Kinston, Mt Airy and some other store in NC. He also managed a store in Martinsville, VA and was promoted from the Martinsville store to the staff at the W-D Raleigh Division about 1978. While on staff he was a produce specialist, store supervisor, grocery buyer and dairy/frozen food buyer. While in the buying office Jerry earned a reputation as a very detailed person who would dot every I and cross every T. When a new dairy/frozen food job was created in the mid-1980s Jerry was picked to be the man to get this very difficult new assignment "off the ground." Later he would be put in charge of the retail grocery pricing for the W-D Raleigh Division because of his attention to detail. He was one of the men that other buyers could turn to for help. While Jerry was working in the buying department the W-D buying department was rated the best buying department in the country. Wal-Mart was rated second. After Jerry retired about 1997 from the buying department such a void was left in the department that he was asked to return and work part time to help fill the void his retirement had created. He did this for several years. Jerry had many interests in life. He loved to play poker and by all accounts was very good at it. He loved sports and liked to attend baseball games at the Durham Bulls Park and also see the Mudcats Baseball Team at Five County Stadium. The sport he loved best was golf. He was very, very good at it well into his 60s. One of his best rounds ever was a par round at the long difficult Duke course in Durham in late 1970s or early 80s. He had to birdie the last 3 holes to accomplish this feat. He always had a very good short game. He was always one of the best players in his current golf group until his mid-70s when his health declined a bit after 3 battles with cancer. Jerry loved to tell stories and could stretch a story to the fullest. The golf group would kid him about his long stories and beg him to hurry and finish the story. Jerry always had a great looking yard and took great pride in it. He was as particular about his yard as he was about work at W-D. He was a wonderful man and a great friend. REAMEY WINN
