Funeral services were held 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2009, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. Born August 14, 1939, on a farm near Ida Grove, Iowa, Jerry Wayne Brownlee was the fourth of six children born to Marvin and Marie (Luscombe) Brownlee. He attended school in Ida Grove and received his diploma there. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove in 1958. On January 18, 1958, Jerry married Sandra Kracht at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. They were blessed with three children, Kathrynn, Joel, and Rodney. Jerry was employed by Midwest Industries for 35 years, then began his own business making use of his lifetime hobby working with small engines and lawn mowers. This soon developed into used car sales and service. He retired in 2001. Jerry was an active Boy Scout leader for six years and took several trips to Ely with the troops, making use of the camping equipment and canoes purchased with paper drive receipts. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, where he served as a church usher. Camping, fishing, traveling, and maintaining his five-acre yard were among Jerry's hobbies. He enjoyed helping others with any repair needs, having coffee with friends in his shop, motorcycle vacations, and wintering in Texas. Jerry was a stock car owner and driver for several years and was also active with the Crawford County Cycle Club. Jerry loved his family dearly. He is survived by his wife, Sandy; three children, Kathrynn (Rick) Pals of Minneapolis, MN, Joel Brownlee of Ft. Worth, TX, and Rodney Brownlee of Ida Grove; and nine grandchildren, Malia (Ben) Pate, Christopher (Karen) Pals, Jamison Pals, Andrea Pals, Sean Brownlee, Heather (Matt) Baxter, and Brandon, Tony, and Tiffany Brownlee. Also surviving are three sisters, Dorothy (Rich) Porter of Lake View, Delores Williams of Ida Grove, and Janice (Lyle) Schaffer of Galva; a brother, Jim (Ardis) Brownlee of Sioux City; a brother-in-law, Larry Smith of LeMars; and a step-mother, Rutheline Brownlee of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Brownlee; his father, Marvin Brownlee; and a sister, Donna Smith. Jerry will be sorely missed by family and many, many friends. He never met a stranger. It was said by many that Jerry could "fix anything," and he usually did. He had a good life.
