Slater May 29, 1946 ~ October 3, 2004 Jerry Slater of Adel, Iowa, died at the age of 58 on Sunday, October 3, 2004, at the Kavanagh House in West Des Moines following a brief battle with cancer. Jerry was born May 29, 1946, to Irene and Merle Slater in Jefferson. Jerry graduated from Rock Valley High School and the University of South Dakota. He earned his Master's Degree from Drake University. He served in the United States Navy and was in Vietnam from 1967-1968. On August 29, 1970, he married JoAnn Wynia in Rock Valley. They made their home in Vermillion, South Dakota. They moved to Emmetsburg where Jerry taught 4th grade and coached high school girls basketball. In 1974 they moved to Le Mars where Jerry coached women's basketball at Westmar College and was an insurance agent for Wynia Insurance in Rock Valley. In 1976, they moved to Adel. Jerry worked at Grand View College in the admissions office and coached the women's basketball team. Later Jerry became the Director of Admissions and Marketing at Grand View. In 1997, Jerry began selling real estate and insurance, eventually forming Russell-Slater Insurance in Adel. From 1993 to 1999, he coached high school girls' basketball for Adel. While doing all this he managed his mother's farm near Guthrie Center and had a cow/calf operation. Jerry was a member of the Adel United Methodist Church where he was trustee. He also was a former member of the Adel City Council. Surviving Jerry are his wife, JoAnn, of Adel; a son, Seth Slater, of Guthrie Center; a daughter, BreAnna Forret and her husband Joseph, of Adel and their son, Wade, who was his grandpa's side shadow. Jerry is also survived by his mother, Irene (Bailey) Slater of Guthrie Center; two sisters: Sandra Wilkinson of Panora and Ginger Sommer of Miami, Oklahoma; and a brother, Kenneth Slater of Cherokee, Iowa.
