Description	:	When Jerry was 9 months old, Josephine immigrated to America, leaving Jerry in Czechoslovakia in the care of his grandmother, an aunt, and three uncles. In 1930 Josephine married Richard Velky, a carpenter, and they settled in the Clutier area. In1932 Josephine went back to Czechoslovakia to bring Jerry to America, who was now 6 ½ years old. In 1930 Josephine married Richard Velky, a carpenter, and they settled in the Clutier area. In1932 Josephine went back to Czechoslovakia to bring Jerry to America, who was now 6 ½ years old. Jerry attended Oneida No. 3 country school until his family moved to Clutier. He then attended the Clutier Public School and Clutier High School, graduating with the Class of 1944. Right after graduation, he left for the Navy, serving 26 months, mostly in the South Pacific as Y3/C. After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he decided he wanted to farm, so his parents sold their house in Clutier and Jerry and his parents bought the 120 acre farm where Jerry and Leona lived in Oneida Township, Section 9, 2 miles NW of Clutier. When Leona was 2 years old, her mother Hermina died, leaving three motherless children Ernest, age 5, Leona, age 2, and Lester, 2 weeks old. Joe and his three children moved in with his mother Ella Pokorny, and her two sons John and Louie, and his sister Agnes Novotny and her 2 girls, Irene and Martha. Ella and Agnes helped Joe raise his children. When Leona was 12 years old, her father Joe married Mamie Duhachek of Toledo. Mamie was a widow with two children, Dorothy and Bemard. When Joe and Mamie got married, Ella and Agnes, with her two girls, moved to Clutier and Joe and Mamie to the farm. Leona attended Carroll No. 1 country school and Clutier High School, graduating in1948. Jerry and Leona retired from farming grain, beef & hogs, and had a farm sale in 1990, but still live on the farm. Besides farming, Jerry also sold Funks G. seed corn for 40 years. They are members of the Immaculate Conception Church in Clutier. Jerry is a member of the American Legion, Eagles, Catholic Order of Foresters, Farm Bureau, Z.C.B.J. and C.S.A. Lodges. He enjoys hunting, fishing, his family, and traveling. Leona is a member of the LC. Rosary Society, National Catholic Society of Foresters, O.R.A. Club, Catholic Workman, and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoys her garden, flowers, her family, and traveling. In 1993 Jerry and Leona, with their two youngest sons John and Tom, made a trip to the Czech Republic to visit his homeland, his aunt who cared for him, and the many relatives he has there. Please check it out online or in person on Saturday morning. Jerome Milo “Jerry” Velky, 94, of Clutier, passed away Thursday, February 25, 2021 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 1, 2021 at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Dennis Conway as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Clutier. Jerome was born on April 13, 1926, in Pacov, Czechoslovakia, the son of Richard and Josephine (Soukup) Velky. He graduated from Clutier High School and furthered his education while in the service. Jerry served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII entering in May of 1944 and discharged in June of 1946. On November 23, 1948, he was united in marriage to Leona Mae Pokorny at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clutier. Jerry farmed near Clutier and also did carpentry. He was a salesman for Funks G Hybrids Seed Corn for many years. Jerry was a member of the former Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clutier. He was a current member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama, Catholic Order of Foresters, ZCBJ Lodge, American Legion for sixty plus years, and Farm Bureau. Jerry enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards (Pepper), going to dances, and loved going to his pond. Survivors include his six children, Ken (Laurie) Velky of Toledo, Mary (Mike) DeVries of Warrensburg, MO., Jim (Chrys) Velky of Ogden, Julie (Mike) Murray of Marion, John Velky of Davenport, and Tom (Danielle) Velky of Waverly; twelve grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Preceding him in death were his parents; and his wife, Leona Mae Velky in 2003.
