Description	:	Jes Jørgen Petersen was born at Nybøl, Nybøl Parish, in Aabrenaa-Sønderborg County, Denmark, on August 26, 1860 when it was part of Germany. He was the fifth child of Peter Petersen (1813-1900) and Ellen Dorthea Hansen (1821-1899) and was baptized on September 16, 1860 in the same parish. He was usually called "J. J." At a young age, he left home and worked as a sailor. Family stories say he travelled widely, and when he was ready to settle down he headed to St. Paul, Minnesota, where there was a large Danish population at the time. There he found work... Read More	Jes Jørgen Petersen was born at Nybøl, Nybøl Parish, in Aabrenaa-Sønderborg County, Denmark, on August 26, 1860 when it was part of Germany. He was the fifth child of Peter Petersen (1813-1900) and Ellen Dorthea Hansen (1821-1899) and was baptized on September 16, 1860 in the same parish. He was usually called "J. J." At a young age, he left home and worked as a sailor. Family stories say he travelled widely, and when he was ready to settle down he headed to St. Paul, Minnesota, where there was a large Danish population at the time. There he found work as a housepainter. He met and married Mary Christensen on May 4, 1895 in St. Paul when he was 34 and she was 23. They farmed in Nebraska for a short time, then moved to Alberta in 1910. Their first home was two granaries pulled together on a farm near Gleichen. After a few years when he hauled wood as well as farmed, he purchased a farm east of Standard (Township 25, Range 21, W4). They raised a family of six: Peter "Elvin" (1896-1917), James "Sydney" (1898-1973), Vera Margaret (1902-1982), Herman Clarence (1906-1990), Emily Lucille (1908-1956) and Walter Edward (1911-1988). J.J. died at age 89 at his home at Standard. His death registration notes his causes of death as aphasia and hemorrhage of cerebrum. His death registration says he is buried at Standard; there is no gravemarker for him. (Written by Marion Peterson, wife of his grandson, Warren)
