THE DAILY BULLETIN, Martinsville, Va., March 2, 1936 Open gunplay flared near the local Public Square in the quietude of Sunday afternoon about two o'clock when Homer Davis, operator of the West End Service Station on Fayette Street, shot Bruce Campbell, 27 year old furniture worker following an argument. Using a 38 special pistol, Davis fired two shots into Campbell's body, Campbell being several paces away when the shooting occurred. The shooting took place on West Main St., opposite the Pythian Building. Davis, said to be partially intoxicated, was arrested. Campbell was carried to Shackelford Hospital, but expired as he was being taken into the building. It is said Campbell was until recently employed in a local furniture plant. He moved with his parents to Martinsville about eight years ago from Rockingham Co., N.C. He was married about four years ago to Miss Fairy Mae Wingfield, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wingfield, of this county. She and a three year old son survive. Also remaining are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. William Campbell, who reside on Church Street, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Dewey Oakes, Miss Nellie Campbell, Messr. Otis, Arnold, and Ben Campbell, all of this city. Funeral services will be held from Horsepasture Christian Church on Tuesday afternoon.
