Colby Beekman of Petersburg (a great grandson of William Beekman) told Muriel and Janet Hoffman a story about Jesse Gum in Jul 1955. The great grandfather, William Beekman, was a lawyer and a friend of Jesse Gum. When Jesse was very ill, just before his death, he had some money at his home. He asked his old friend, Mr. Beekman, to take the money to a bank in Springfield. Mr. Beekman made the trip, and chose a very round about route, because there were neighbors whom he wished to avoid when he was on this special errand. After Jesse died, rumor had it that there was money hidden (buried) on the farm, and for years, people would go there and dig around the farm trying to find it.
