Williams, for more than half a century one of the most highly esteemed and honored residents of the county, passed peacefully away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jerry Shaw, in Perry, shortly after noon Tuesday, February 25th. Mr. Williams was 85 years old and had always enjoyed good health until within the past year when he began to fail and for a few weeks past had been seriously ill and his death was not unexpected. The funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Thursday afternoon from the Quincy church in Marcy Township, his old home, conducted by the Rev. A.E. Thomas, of the Ogden M.E. church, and is said to be one of the largest funerals ever held in the community. Everybody knew and loved Grandfather Williams and sorrowing friends drove for many miles to pay their last tribute of esteem to a worthy citizen and loyal friend. Many beautiful floral tributes bespoke the heartfelt sorrow of all. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the cemetery at that place beside those of his wife who preceded him several years ago. Jess C. Williams was born in Henry County, Kentucky, April 2, 1825, son of Jesse and Susanna (Simmons) Williams, natives of Virginia. When three years old his parents removed to Montgomery County, Indiana, and engaged in farming. Here he grew to young manhood and at the breaking out of the Mexican war joined his country's defenders and fought valiantly for her rights, but fortunately was never injured in battle. He was united in marriage in Indiana to Miss Letitia Hopper and shortly afterward in 1851 came with his young wife to Boone county and settled on the old homestead in Marcy township, south of Moingona. His parent's family came at the same time and settled in Cass Township, where in 1854 the father died and the mother in 1869 and of eight children only one now survives, Tanford B. Williams residing on the old homestead in Cass. Jesse C. secured a portion of his land by government grant and a portion he bought from the River Land Company and became one of the largest land holders and most successful farmers in the county. At the time of his arrival settlers were few and far between in the county and he and his wife patiently suffered all the hardships and inconveniences incident to the settlement of a new country and bravely bore their full share in its development and lived to see their labors crowned with success and to enjoy an old age of peace and plenty, sustained and cherished by the love and devotion of worthy sons and daughters. During the early sixties Mr. Williams served four years on the board of county supervisors, has often been honored with offices of trust and responsibility in his home township and always gained and held the highest confidence and warmest esteem of his friends and associates in both a business and a social way. Several years ago he suffered the loss of his right leg, though in what manner we do not remember at this time and since then he has practically lived a retired life. His wife died August 26, 1892, and since then he has made his home with his children, most of the time with his daughter and son in law, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Shaw, on the old home place until about a year ago they removed to Perry, where they have resided since and where he passed away. To Mr. and Mrs. Williams were born nine children, four of whom, John G., Drusilla, Martha and Jesse, have passed away. He is survived by two sons, James F. a prominent resident of Woodward, and Robert, a prosperous farmer of Marcy township, and three daughters, Harriett, wife of Jerry Shaw, of Perry, Mary E., wife of Thomas Johnson, of Twist, Washington, and Sarah E., wife of Oliver Holloway of Townsend, Montana, a number of grandchildren to mourn his death and to whom is extended the sincere sympathy of the entire community. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
