Description	:	Jesse E. Hager, the son of James Arthur and Mary Ellen Smith Hager, was born June 24, 1891, near Deweese, Neb. He died Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Good Samaritan Center, Superior, at the age of 97 years, 3 months and 22 days. Hager received ms education at the Antioch School and the Plum Valley School, before graduating from the Lawrence High School. He then continued his education at the Grand Island Business College. Hager, the son of James Arthur and Mary Ellen Smith Hager, was born June 24, 1891, near Deweese, Neb. He died Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Good Samaritan Center, Superior, at the age of 97 years, 3 months and 22 days. Hager received ms education at the Antioch School and the Plum Valley School, before graduating from the Lawrence High School. He then continued his education at the Grand Island Business College. After college, he went to Lincoln where he was a supervisor in charge of the Burlington mail room at night. Later he moved to Lawrence where he purchased a hay baler and followed the thresher baling hay the next three years. He then moved to Fairbury, where he worked for a construction company, building mills and elevators for a year. Dec. 21,1915, he was united in marriage to Celia M. Doll at Clay Center. They lived at Norton, Kan., where they farmed and while living there a son, William, was born. In 1919, they moved to their farm northeast of Guide Rock and it was there the marriage was blessed with the birth of their daughter, Alice. In 1961, they retired from the farm and moved into Guide Rock to make their home. Hager took an active interest in both his church and community affairs. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and had served on the board of directors as well as filling the position of Sunday School teacher for several years. He had also served on the school board for District 90 and District 17 and in his younger years was a member of the Guide Rock Odd Fellows. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife of 72 years, Celia, who died Sept. 3,1988; his son, William David, who died Jan. 27, 1986; an infant daughter, Mary Ellen; brothers, Fred, Charles, Earnest and William; and sisters, Julia Leeds, Goldia Dooley and Nellie, who died in infancy. Survivors include his daughter, Alice Blackwell, Cypress, Calif.; a grandson, Roger Blackwell, Santa Ana, Calif.; one sister, Elsie Coon,Tomball, Texas; and many other relatives. The funeral was Thursday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m., from the Guide Rock Methodist Church with the Rev. Shirley Carpenter officiating. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Lawrence.
