Read More	Mr. Jesse Hilliard Prather died at his home in this city Sunday morning June 3rd, 1912 at 10am after an illness of three weeks with la grippe and stomach troubles. Three weeks ago he was taken with cold and soon his stomach began to give him trouble and he gradually grew weaker until his condition was considered serious. His physician, Dr. W.S. Taylor had Dr C.W.Mosely, an eminent stomach specialist of Greensboro, to come here and consult with him about the case twice during last week. Sunday morning he was apparently as well as he had been for several days and was taken worse while Dr. Taylor was making his usual morning visit. His condition was seen to be serious at once and no restoratives or heart stimulants would give relief and he breathed his last while surrounded by his family and attending physician. Mr. Prather was born in this city fifty eight years ago, on July 18th 1853. His father, the lat Frank Prather, was one of the leading merchants and business men of this section of the state for many years and gave his son a fine oppotunity for developing into the splendid financier which marked his business career. As soon as he attained to the years of manhood he engaged in manufacturing and his efforts were eminently successful. First he was engaged in the manufacture of cotton and later operated a tobacco factory for many years with marked success. During recent years he has been interested in the manufacture of funiture and owned a large interest in the National Furniture Company of this city. He was one of the promoters of the Bank of Mt Airy and was president of the institution for several years. It was not alone in business that Mr. Prather was promient. Early in life he united with the Methodist church and the denomination never had a more loyal member. He was liberal with his wealth and was always ready to do his part and more. He was an official member of the church for many years and was always considered one of the pillars of the church. In politics he was a Democrat and took an active interest in public matters. For many years, in succession he served this town as Commissioner and was twice honored with the office of Mayor. He was considered a public spirited citizen who could always be counted upon to be on the side of every movement that would help uplift and build his town. Heis home life was ideal. Early in his life he was married to Miss Hallie Porter of Whythe County, VA, who lived only a short time. Later he married Miss Lilla Estes, of Stokes County. This union was blessed with five children four of whom survive, Misses Briggs and Francis and William and John. Fifteen years ago, Mr. Prather built in this city a modern home that is one of the most beautiful residences here. He leaves an estate estimated to be worth as much as a hundred thousand dollars and an honorable name and record. Peace to his ashes. Mt Airy News June 6, 1912
