He then moved to Clarke County, Missouri, where he lived for four years before moving to Van Buren County, Iowa. While in Ohio, on February 17, 1820, he married Mary "Polly" JENKS; she died in Ohio in 1864. On February 27, 1872, in Van Buren County, Iowa, he married Elizabeth HUFFORD, who was the widow of Ruben FENSTERMAKER. Elizabeth had two children surviving from her first marriage (Martha Ellen and John K.). Jesse owned property in town, belonged to no church or social society, and politically was a Republican. He served in Captain Whipple's Company of Militia at Newport, Rhode Island, during the War of 1812. He was captain of a vessel for ten years; he lost two vessels by shipwreck and was shipwrecked twice.
