McGrew, of this city, received the sad news on Friday of the death of her brother Jesse Long, an engineer on the Iowa Central railroad, who with three other men was instantly killed in a wreck near Richland. McGrew, of this city, received the sad news on Friday of the death of her brother Jesse Long, an engineer on the Iowa Central railroad, who with three other men was instantly killed in a wreck near Richland. Mrs. McGrew left on the evening train for Oskaloosa to attend the funeral of her brother. All the men live in Oskaloosa, are married and have families. McMahon, Long's fireman, was the only one of the front end crew who was rescued. The train was a double header, Long and McMahon being on the front engine and Engineer Williams and Fireman West on the rear. A brakeman named Woolsey was also killed. McMahon said the wreck came without warning. He was looking out of the cab window and noticed the pony truck - the front wheels of the engine - were bound and going to leave the rail. He yelled to Long and the next thing he knew he was hurled forty feet down into a creek. An oil car in the rear of the engines was burst open and fire added to the horror of the wreck, and the firemen and brakemen were roasted to death. Jesse Long was found under an engine. He was not burned. A large hole in his head caused by an iron had done its work and his death was instantaneous. Williams crawled out from under his engine but died in a few hours. He was parboiled. "Doc" Long, a brother of Jesse Long and Mrs. McGrew, was killed in a wreck on the same road three years ago. Mrs. Long is prostrated with grief and it was thought for a while that the sock would rob her of life. The Oskaloosa Telegram in speaking of the wreck says: "The section of the road where the wreck occurred is not in the best condition. This may be explained by the proximity of a creek.
