WASHINGTON ST Papillion, NE 339-3232 Published in the Omaha World-Herald from 7/15/2008 - 7/16/2008 Teachers described a 17-year-old high school student who died Sunday as "a great, well-rounded student . . . the type of student that smiled a lot and was a pleasure to have in the classroom." Jessica Dierks, who would have been a senior this fall at Papillion-La Vista South High School, was killed Sunday in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Nebraska Highway 370 and 48th Street. She died at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 5:55 p.m., the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office said. "Our daughter was deeply loved by many family and friends. She will be missed. She always had a smile on her face and will be remembered with that smile," the Dierks family said in a statement. Another 17-year-old Papillion-La Vista South student, Jennifer Kelly, was injured, the Sheriff's Office said. She was in fair condition today at the Nebraska Medical Center. Counselors were available today at the high school. Principal Enid Schonewise notified parents of the tragedy Sunday night through an automated service. The principal said it was a tough time for the school community. Both girls had just ended their junior year at the school. Annette Eyman, a district spokeswoman, said funeral arrangements for Dierks were pending. According to the Sheriff's Office, Dierks was a passenger in a silver 2001 Oldsmobile Alero driven by Kelly. The Alero had been heading east on the highway and was turning north onto 48th Street when it collided with a pickup truck that was traveling west on Highway 370. The impact spun the pickup into a BMW that was stopped southbound on 48th Street at the traffic light. No other serious injuries were reported.
