Description	:	Jessie Esther Gallentine was born at Melbourne, Iowa, Nov 19, 1901, the daughter of Jay D. and Ollie Voichard Gallentine. She was the little sister to three half-brothers, Charles, Elmer, and Ray Gallentine. On Feb. 14, 1920, she married Bryon Devick of Gilman. They were one of three couples married between 2 and 3 p.m. that day at the Methodist parsonage by Rev. W. G. Crowder. Jessie... Read More	Jessie Esther Gallentine was born at Melbourne, Iowa, Nov 19, 1901, the daughter of Jay D. and Ollie Voichard Gallentine. She was the little sister to three half-brothers, Charles, Elmer, and Ray Gallentine. On Feb. 14, 1920, she married Bryon Devick of Gilman. They were one of three couples married between 2 and 3 p.m. that day at the Methodist parsonage by Rev. W. G. Crowder. They located four and a half miles south of LeGrand and over the next six years four children were born to Jessie and Byron. Around midnight on Tuesday, March 16, 1926, an accident happened. Jessie was laying the fire for the night when sparks from the stove set her apron on fire. The flames spread over her dress, enveloping her in flames. Her husband came to her rescue, beating out the fire with his hands and tearing her clothing from her. Dr. E.M. Mills of LeGrand was called and had Jessie taken to the Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown. Both her hands and arms were deeply burned and it was estimated she suffered lesser burns on much of her body. Byron's right hand was badly burned and his left one less seriously so. On Wednesday, March 17th, Jessie's condition was regarded as serious. She died of her injuries at 3:30 a.m. on Friday morning, March 19th. In addition to her husband, left to mourn her loss were their four children Elmer, 5 years; Katherine, 3 years; Gerald, 17 months; and Floyd, 5 weeks; her mother Mrs. John Gallentine of Melbourne; and her half-brothers Charles Gallentine of Van Cleve; Elmer Gallentine of Green Mountain; and Ray Gallentine of Marshalltown. She was preceded in death by her father Jay D. Gallentine. A prayer service was held at the home of Byron's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Omer Devick, six miles northwest of Gilman, at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 21. A 2 p.m. funeral service followed at Stavenger Church, with burial in the Stavenger Cemetery. -Marshalltown Times-Republican March 1926
