Hemstreet Smith, was born on a farm between Dunlap and Panama, Iowa on July 26, 1891. He grew up in this community, marrying Bertha M. Jacobsen on December 10, 1910, and continued to farm. Smith, youngest child of Elmer H. and Sarah A. Hemstreet Smith, was born on a farm between Dunlap and Panama, Iowa on July 26, 1891. He grew up in this community, marrying Bertha M. Jacobsen on December 10, 1910, and continued to farm. On July 12, 1914 their first son Edmond Harold was born in the same farmhouse where Jesse was born. Joining the family on Octoaber 14, 1915 was Ronald David. In 1918, the family moved to Mapleton, Minnesota, where they continued farming. Here daughter, Edna Nadine, joined the family on October 15, 1918. In Minnesota, where they lived for ten years, they enjoyed the lakes, fishing and swimming in the summer, and iceskating in the winter.... In 1928 the family moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa where Jesse bought a garage dealership for Overland-Pontiac cars. They lived there for about two years, sold out and moved to Winterset, Iowa, to farm once more. About two years later, the farm dried out and the family moved back to the Dunlap area. Jesse used to buy and break Sand Hills broncs. The boys learned to ride and drive horses and had an exciting time. Edmond, Ronald and Edna graduated from high school in Dunlap. In 1946, Jesse and Bertha bouht a farm on the outskirts of Dunlap. They worked hard to make a pretty yard of flowers for all to enjoy and especially to have bouquets for the cemetery on Memorial Day, which they called Decoration Day. Early in 1959, they left home to drive to Colorado and Arizona to visit two of their married children. In Colorado, they were notified that their house had burned to the ground; everything was lost. They continued to farm but relocated to a house in Dunlap. There they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1960. Jesse enjoyed hunting pheasants with some of his numerous friends. After the death of Bertha on July 28, 1975, he continued to live alone in the same house until his death on December 31, 1980.
