Jessie Maude Stark, the daughter of John Wesley and Cora Lea (Rudy) Pickney, was born in Dodge County near North Bend, Neb., on Sept. 1, 1907, and passed away in Aurora, Neb., on Feb. 10, 2014, at the age of 106. The youngest of nine children, Jessie lived on the family farm west of North Bend and attended Prairie View School. The family later moved to Ames, where she attended school through the 10th grade. Jessie had a love of reading and a talent for creative writing and poetry. She won first place in a countywide essay contest on patriotism for eighth-grade students. After the death of her father, Jessie and her mother moved to Fremont. Jessie was united in marriage to Glenn M. Stark on Sept. 15, 1937, at Fremont. Following their marriage, they lived in Paxton where Glenn was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1943, they moved to a farm near Fairfield. In 1955, they moved to a farm east of Grand Island and in 1963 to a farm east of Phillips. She was a hardworking farmer's wife, gardening, canning, raising chickens and preparing meals for corn shelling and haying crews. Jessie was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving in many offices, including Worthy Matron. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and an active participant in the women's groups. She wrote weekly letters to family members to keep in touch. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, handwork, crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble. Her family will fondly remember the bread she baked every week and her Peanut Butter Fingers that were dessert for many family gatherings. In 2002, she moved to East Park Villa in Aurora and in 2007 to Memorial Community Care. The family would like to acknowledge the exceptional care given to her while living in both of these facilities. Those who remain to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Arlene (Orlo) Carriker of Phillips, and Janet (Steve) Rainforth of Doniphan; a son, Leslie (Marlene) Stark of Grand Island; nine grandchildren, Dale (Carolyn) Carriker of Hastings, Julie (John) Briseno, Alan (Patty) Carriker, JoAnn (Carroll) Smith of Phillips, Dan Carriker of Louisburg, Kan., Deb (Todd) Norman of Grand Island, Becky (Jeff) Westwood of Waco, Doug (Katrina) Rainforth of Doniphan and Krista (Matt) Boba of Wheaton, Ill.; 18 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, on Aug. 17, 1968; her parents; brothers, Ray, Thomas, John and Irvin; and sisters Mabel, Cora May, Ellen and Lois..
