Her death occurred at Aurora, Nebraska on December 11, 1981 having attained the age of 91 years, 11 months and 2 days. At the age of 6 years she moved with her parents to Custer County, Nebraska where her father had been hired by the Railroad to extend their lines. She graduated from the Comstock High School which at that time was a 10th Grade high school. Then through correspondence, she attained her 12 grade diploma and her teachers certificate. She taught her first school in a sod house near Comstock. During her life, she had taught school in Comstock, Loup City, Arcadia, Aurora, Plymouth, Thedford and several rural schools. She taught free hand sketching and phonics and syllables using original games. Taught speech for children 1 to 12. Mrs. Westlake was a 78 year member of the United Methodist Faith and was active in church affairs as long as her health would permit. She was a charter member and first president of the World War I Barracks,Auxiliary. She was an Honorary lifetime member of the PTA in Pylmouth, Nebraska. State Amercanism chaiman for the World War I barracks Auxiliary and her work won a citation for the Nebraska Chapter. She was a member of eh Sod House Society; Affiliated with the Grand Island Sketch Club; Lincoln Artists Guild, Associated Artist of Omaha and North Platte Valley Association. One of her paintings was displayed in Joselyn Memorial in Omaha in 1949. Mrs. Westlake taught a lot of children in art work and many unable to afford lessons were taught free. On January 2, 1921 she was united in marriage to Mel Roy Westlake at Arcadia. Soon after their marriage they moved to Aurora where her husband served as custodian in the schools for 13 years. One daughter Elva Joy was born to them, and preceded her parents in death on January 4, 1929. After Roy retired from the school system they moved to Custer County and to Valley County. In 1943 they entered the Soldiers and Sailors home in Grand Island and made their home there and in Aurora; After his death on January 22, 1968 she resided in Aurora and then in Hastings and then returned to Aurora, where she has since resided. Also preceding her in death were her parents; four brothers, John, Otto, Ernest and Mark, Jr. McGavran and four sisters, Mrs. Alice Shanks, Inez McGavran, Mrs. Malintha Shanks and Mrs. Martha McClary. Her only survivors are nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, several cousins and many friends. Contributor: Don (46558676)
