Prince enlisted in the Federal Army on May 25, 1863. He was assigned to Company G, 4th Regiment of Calvary. He was discharged at Nashville, Tennessee on July 12, 1865. He was suffering from severe chronic diarrhea at the time of his discharge and was brought home on a cot and placed in his mother's home in Bradley County, Tennessee. Prince Civil War pension papers This information was taken from Jesse's Civil War pension papers dated April 24, 1874. Jesse W. Prince enlisted in the Federal Army on May 25, 1863. He was assigned to Company G, 4th Regiment of Calvary. He was discharged at Nashville, Tennessee on July 12, 1865. He was suffering from severe chronic diarrhea at the time of his discharge and was brought home on a cot and placed in his mother's home in Bradley County, Tennessee. He is described as being five feet and ten inches tall, red complexion, black eyes and light hair. His brother, Daniel P. Prince, sent the following affidavit to the Pension Board: "My name is Daniel P. Prince. My age is 41. I live in James County, Tennessee. I am the brother of Jesse W. Prince. When Jesse left Bradley County where he lived, he was a very stout and healthy man. He never had but one spell of sickness before he went into the Federal Army. When he left he would have weighed about a hundred and sixty-five pounds and not yet grown. I heard he was coming home in July 1865, if he was able to get here for he was then very low with chronic diarrhea. When I got to the (railroad) I found he had been carried from the train to Mr. William Sanders house, about three quarters of a mile from his mother's house, where he lived. He was lying on a bunk on which he had been brought from Nashville and was scarce able to speak above a whisper. Two men carried him from Sanders house to his home at mother's. I waited on him for a time and did not think he would get well, but towards fall he began to improve and he got about in winter as he could travel about the neighborhood, but his health has been poor since that time. I have known him well all the time and of my own knowledge know that much of the time he is unable to work and even when trying to work I have known him often to suffer so much at night with pains in his legs and body, that he scarce slept any. He has never regained his health. He is hollow cheeked and sunken eyed, and one of his ey es is often very seriously affected. I know that he has frequent attacks of diarrhea, especially in the summer. I cannot say as to what part of the time he cannot work, but I know that he often works from necessity when not able and that often he has to quit for a few days or weeks at a time. Signed: Daniel P. Prince Another affidavit was filed by Captain Robert L. Gamble, former commanding officer of Company G, 4th Tennessee Cavalry. "I took command of the company about May 10, 1864. The said Jesse W. Prince was a member of the company. He was at that time a single man, large and stout, weighing about 185 pounds and in fine health. I was with the company from that time until December 26, 1864, when I wounded. During all that time said Prince was in the service and in good health. When I was able to join the company again, it was about April 4, 1865 and it was on the bay opposite Mobile, Alabama. I then found him sick with chronic diarrhea and was not able for duty. Prince was in sound health when I took command, for I was then 2nd captain, and I suppose he was when he entered the service. I was with him more or less till we were all discharged at Nashville, July 12, 1865, and he was so bad that I never expected to see him again alive." Jesse W. Prince married Lydia C. Frazier of Bradley Co., Tennessee on March 22, 1868 at the home of Martin Frazier. John M. Frazier witnessed the marriage. Gilbert R. Frazier served with Jesse in Company G, 4th Tenn. Cavalry. Jesse W. and Lydia C. Prince has the following children: Louisa Jane Prince, born Jan. 31, 1870; Lydia E. Prince, born July 7, 1872; Onzelo G. Prince, born Sept. 12, 1873; Charlie H. Prince, born May 11?, 1876; Harriett M. Prince, born July 27, 1878; Samuel M. Prince, born June 4, 1881. Jesse W. Prince died January 31, 1886 of Tuberculosis. He was survived by his widow Lydia C.
