She was born January 5, 1933 in Gaston County to Joseph Garland and Grace Bailey Polson Worley. Jewel attended Cricket Baptist Church, where she loved to sing. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Coy Shumate; son, Michael Lee Hemric; infant daughter, Kathy Darlene Shumate; grandchildren, Brian Hemric, Angela Hemric, Johnny Rollins; brother, Garfield Worley; and sisters, Geraldine Smoot and Gewenith Nichols. She is survived by her daughters, Janet Rollins and spouse John of King William, Virginia, Kimberly Ann Whitley and spouse Brian, and Geneva Marlene Shumate all of North Wilkesboro, son, James Carl Hemric and spouse Phyllis of North Wilkesboro; sisters, Gladys Cooper and Beatrice Byers both of North Wilkesboro; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Graveside service will be private with Rev. Tony Malay officiating. The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Service from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Wilkes, PO Box 306, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
