Jewel Taylor Finn Piper was born to John and Elizabeth (McIlrath) Taylor on September 24, 1924. Jewel Taylor Finn Piper was born to John and Elizabeth (McIlrath) Taylor on September 24, 1924. Jewel was baptized at the Dixon Methodist Church and attended Clark Center School, north and east of Dixon. In 1932, She moved with her family to a farm near Concord and graduated from Concord High School in 1941. She earned her Associate of Arts degree from Wayne State College in 1943, and was hired by Laurel Public Schools to teach fourth and fifth grades. Jewel served in that capacity for four years. Jewel was married to Warren B. Finn of Wayne in 1947, and to that marriage two sons were born, Thomas and David Finn. Warren became a disabled World War II veteran in 1949. Jewel taught at 25 North, a Wayne country school during the 1949-1950 school year. In 1953, Jewel returned to Wayne State College and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955. Following graduation, she and her two sons moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa, where she taught business subjects for three years. During those years, Jewel worked on her master's degree at Wayne State College and at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She earned that degree in the summer of 1958, and was hired as a business instructor at the Norfolk Junior College. In the late 1950's, she also taught summer and night classes at Wayne State College. During Jewel's 24 years at the junior college and at Northeast Community College, she served in various capacities: business instructor, Dean of Women, and chairman of the Business and Management Division. In 1962, Jewel married H.L. "Joe" Piper of Norfolk. Joe passed away in 2004. Joe and Jewel were the parents of five children, Jewel's children, Tom and Dave Finn, and Joe's three children, Jolene, Joel, and Joette Piper. Jewel's educational honors and awards included the Pi Omega Honorary Business Fraternity and the Pi Gamma Mu Honorary Social Science Fraternity. In addition, she was named an Outstanding Educator of America in 1971, and again in 1973. In 1982, the Nebraska Legislature Resolution #274, which commended her for 32 years of dedicated service to education, was passed by the Legislature. Jewel retired from Northeast Community College in 1982. In 1999, Northeast Community College awarded Jewel Emeritus Status. Jewel was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliaries for more than 50 years. She was also a member of Christ Lutheran Church and a past member of Fairplay Golf Course. Survivors left to cherish her memory include: Thomas Finn, Dave and Kathy Finn, Jolene Piper Rogge, Joel and Mary Piper, and Joette and Rod Faubion; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: husband, Joe; parents; brothers, Harvey and Donald; and sister, Avis. She especially missed her daughter-in-law, Judy Finn and her sister-in-law, Lucile Taylor. Memorial services on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Burial in New Lutheran Cemetery in Norfolk. Obituary information from the Lincoln Journal Star.
