Assisting at the afternoon reception were Mrs. Doan's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Laemmle; Mrs. Milo Hoisveen, Mrs. Bill Willmann of Fargo; Mrs. Laura Brousseau, Mrs. Alphonse Kulzer of Rutland; Jerry Doan, Lynn Laemmle, Dianne Lapp and Carla Kay Laemmle. There were 70 guests. The Doans operate the Black Leg Ranch south of McKenzie. They have two sons, John, who is married and a student at North Dakota State University in Fargo, and Jerry, at home. Doan Jr., 80, McKenzie, known to his friends as "Babe," died Jan. 24, 2002, at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Babe was born Nov. 7, 1921, at his parents' home in McKenzie, and as he liked to point out, "right there on the kitchen table." He attended McKenzie grade school through the eighth grade. Babe met Hazel Peterson at a dance at the Eagles Club, and they were married on Feb. 21, 1945, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck. Babe was a third generation rancher on the "Black Leg Ranch," which was homesteaded in 1882. He was an avid private pilot, and a member of the Civil Air Patrol and the Flying Farmers Association. He and Hazel spent many winters in California visiting relatives. He was a man who liked to be busy, and he used his abilities as a carpenter to make frames for his family and friends. He enjoyed photography and developing his own pictures. Babe always came up with a special idea. He enjoyed writing, gardening and his flowers, but what he especially loved and enjoyed were his grandkids. He loved making things for them, and also proudly wore his coat identifying him as grandpa to Miss Rodeo. Good times were had at their cabin on Lake Isabel, and good times were had just being with Babe. He was a 41-year member of the Stockmen's Association, a member of the Elks and Eagles, and a charter member of the Moffit lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Peterson Doan, McKenzie; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Renae Doan, McKenzie, and John and Becky Doan, Wichita, Kan.; his seven grandchildren, Shanda Doan and her fiance Dan [Don] Morgan, Jeremy, Jay and Jayce Doan and Tiffany Doan, all of Wichita [error]; Anastasia and Rodney Adams, Oletha [sic}, Kan., and Angela and Shawn Craver, Pennsylvania; two great-grandchildren, Luke and Elizabeth Craver; and a great-grandchild soon to arrive. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jewell W. Doan, Sr. and Julia Goff.
