She died Thursday, March 28, 2002 at the Alegent Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of sixty-seven. JoAnn was born in Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ, September 22, 1935 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, March 10, 1949. She received her education at the Denison Community Schools. On June 22, 1952, JoAnn was united in marriage to Alfred Grau in Denison. The couple made their home in Manning unti9l moving to Denison in 1956. JoAnn was first and foremost a mother. After her children were raised, she started working at Montgomery Ward until the Denison store closed. She subsequently worked at Eventide for several years. She was very active with her children and their activities, and was involved with little league baseball for 12 years, Cub Scout den mother for 12 years, Girl Scout leader and 4-H leader for 3 years each. JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Leonard Marquardt. Survivors include her husband, Alfred of Denison; four sons, David of Aurelia; Doug and his wife, Lauri of Vienne, Virginia; Randy and his wife, Kristi of San Diego, California; Donovan and his wife, Susan of Sioux City, Iowa; and one daughter, Dawn Jessen and her husband, Arwood of Aurelia, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Ryan West of Linn Grove, Iowa; Randy Jessen of Aurelia, Iowa; Tal and Dylan Grau of Sioux City, Iowa; Erika and Kyle Grau of Vienna, Virginia; Nicholas and Nathan Grau of San Diego, California; two sisters, Donnabelle Massman and her husband, Verle of Westside and Darlene Ernst of Schleswig. Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm, Monday, April 1, 2002 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Eldon Hardekopf singing "Be Not Afraid", "On Eagle's Wings" and "Here I Am, Lord" and congregational hymn "The Old Rugged Cross". Pallbearers were: Michael Massman, Richard Hamman, Arwood Jessen, Randy Jessen, Dylan Grau, Ryan West, Vic Malone, and Tal Grau.
