Description	:	Joan Kooiker, 89, of Middleburg died Saturday, October 11, at her residence. Funeral services were Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Middleburg Free Grace Reformed Church of Middleburg, with the burial following the service at the Capel Township cemetery of Middleburg. Mrs. Kooiker passed away in her home on October 11 after being diagnosed with cancer in September 2008. Funeral services were Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Middleburg Free Grace Reformed Church of Middleburg, with the burial following the service at the Capel Township cemetery of Middleburg. Mrs. Kooiker passed away in her home on October 11 after being diagnosed with cancer in September 2008. She was born May 3, 1919, in Sioux Center to Richard and Dena (Van Putten) Dykstra and spent her childhood on a farm south of Rock Valley. Following high school she taught at a country school northwest of Rock Valley for six years. She then spent one year in California working as a riveter in an airplane factory near the close of WW II. Shortly after returning to Iowa she met William H. Kooiker. The couple were married December 5, 1945. They raised their family of 10 on a dairy farm near Middleburg. After her husband "Billy's" death in 1968 she continued to operate the farm with the help of her children. She had a strong and steady faith and believed God had a plan for her life which enabled her to accept trials and difficulties and to rejoice and give thanks for the many blessings God gave her. She touched the lives of each of her children and grandchildren with her faith, humor, intelligence and love for life. She loved reading, traveling, playing cards, painting ceramics and spending time enjoying nature. She was a member of Middleburg Free Grace Reformed Church. Survivors are her children Harlyn and Frieda Kooiker of Magnolia, Minnesota, Beth Kooiker of Sioux Center, Bill and Brenda Kooiker, Paul and Sue Kooiker, Paula and Daryl Meendering, Rich and Minerva Kooiker, all of Middleburg, Dave and Ruth Kooiker of Lake Wilson, Minnesota, DeeAnn and Bob Cleveringa of Orange City, Barb and Wrede Vogel of Luverne, Minnesota, and Ruth and Dan Bentaas of Sioux Falls; 44 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Albert and Harriet Kooiker of Hull; sister-in-law, Clara Vande Weerd of Bruce, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a son, Daniel Kooiker; daughterin-law Peggy Kooiker; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; sister and husband, Jess and Clarence Mulder; sister, Edna; brothers and wives, John and Marty Dykstra and Bill and Eva Dykstra; three brothers in infancy; two sisters in infancy; sister-in-law and husband, Johanna and Leroy Wallinga; and brother-inlaw Nick Vande Weerd.
