Read More	Published in The Rochester Sentinel Monday, December 29, 2008 Joan Barr Tipmore Oct. 27, 1920-Dec. 12, 2008 Joan (Joie) Barr TIPMORE, 88, a native of Rochester, died Dec. 12 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., following a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Floyd L. (Bill) Tipmore, who died in 1996, and the daughter of Guy and Marianne Barr. The Barr family home was at 1020 Jefferson St., from where Joan attended elementary school and graduated from Rochester High School in 1938. The Barrs were members of the First Baptist Church. Joan attended Indiana University, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and where she met her husband, Bill. He had been an outstanding athlete at Elkhart High School and at Indiana University captained both football and basketball teams. Joan later graduated from Huntington College and after moving with her family to Florida entered the banking business. Joan's family was prominent in Rochester affairs. Her grandfather, George Dawson, was in the drug store business at the southwest corner of Main and Eighth streets for 54 years. Her father, Guy Barr, was an outstanding basketball player, being a member of the first RHS team and then with the undefeated Purdue team of 1911-12. His 97 points scored as a Zebra remains the state's single-game high school scoring record. Joan is survived by her son, David, Marion, Ala.; her daughter and husband, Marianne Cannon-Doress and Irvin Doress, Wenham, Mass.; granddaughters Emily Cummings, Boston, Mass., and Catherine Brownworth, Bethesda, Md., and their families. Also surviving are two nieces, Carol Reed, Monmouth, Ore., and Carol Raso, Huntley, Ill. A sister, Carolyn Ensign Buss, preceded in death. Donations in Joan's memory can be made to St. Jude's Children's Fund and sent in care of son David Tipmore, 208 Clay St., Marion, AL 36756.
