Description	:	Joan Werner, 79, of Minden died Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Bethany Home in Minden. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Don Hunzeker officiating. Burial was on Saturday at Osco Cemetery. She was born Dec. 20, 1934, in Hastings to William and Hilda (Borchers) Schukei. On Oct. 14, 1956, she married Melvin E. "Pete" Werner. "Pete" Werner. He died in 2009. —— Survivors include her daughters, Linda Doane and her husband, Greg, of Denver and Kristy McBride of Lincoln; son, Steve Werner and his wife, Lisa, of Minden; grandchildren, Josh and Sarah Werner of Lincoln and Nic Werner of Minden; stepgranddaughter, Gabrielle McBride of Chicago; and sisters, Lois Bullard and her husband, Darrel, of Hastings, Janice Ulmer and her husband, LaRayne, of Grafton and Ethel Schukei of Hastings. She was baptized and confirmed in 1948 at Zion Lutheran Church. Joan attended kindergarten through eighth grade at Zion Parochial School. She graduated from Holstein High School in 1952. She married Pete at Zion Lutheran Church. They made their home on a farm near Norman, and in summer 2006 they moved into Minden. Joan had worked at Bethany Home for more than 30 years and retired in November 2005. Joan enjoyed working in her yard and tending to her many flower gardens. She also enjoyed decorating her home and giving it a "cozy" feel. She loved repainting furniture and giving it a new look until the next season came along. She always loved spending time with her grandkids and family. And, she was especially fond of the Christmas season for the religious meaning as well as decorating her home and setting her dining room table for her family and decorating her home to entertain friends. Each year she anxiously awaited the start of "her" Christmas music. She was a member of Snowflake Club and Church Circles and enjoyed morning and afternoon coffee with her friends and playing cards. She also enjoyed all the young people she worked with at Bethany and "mothering" them, plus, all her Bethany co-workers who became her lifelong friends. She found joy watching the birds in her front porch flower gardens or the simple things such as looking out her window and watching the cars go by and people walking. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Marlene Schukei.
