Born in Florence County, SC, on May 31, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Josie Carraway Marsh and David L. Marsh, Sr. Joan grew up in Johnsonville, SC, graduating from Johnsonville High School with honors. She earned an undergraduate degree from Columbia College and a Masters in Education from the University of South Carolina. She married William (Bill) L. Jowers of Hemingway, SC, in June of 1954 and the young couple made Columbia, SC, their home. Joan was a dedicated and loving mother whose powerful presence is reflected in her children. Joan also made a great difference in the lives of those with whom she came in contact through her work—first at Morris Village Alcohol & Drug Rehabilitation Center and later as a Guidance Counselor at Columbia High School. Joan was a member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church where she once taught Sunday School for many years, was the Assistant Director of the Youth Department, and acted as the Interim Youth Director. Joan died as she lived—always providing a warm smiling face and a caring hand, and putting family, friends and people first. She touched the lives of many and will always be remembered in our hearts and minds.
