Description	:	Joan Maxine McCracken, 85, passed away Monday, Jan 5, 2015, in Helena. Joan was born on April 18, 1929 at St. Mary's Hospital in Conrad to Tom and Stella (Stokes) McCracken. She lived on the family farm northeast of Ledger for eight months until Stella's untimely death from spinal meningitis. At that time, Tom wisely asked Stella's older sister, Blanche, and her husband, Mike Moritz, to care for her at their farm home. Read More	Joan Maxine McCracken, 85, passed away Monday, Jan 5, 2015, in Helena. Joan was born on April 18, 1929 at St. Mary's Hospital in Conrad to Tom and Stella (Stokes) McCracken. She lived on the family farm northeast of Ledger for eight months until Stella's untimely death from spinal meningitis. At that time, Tom wisely asked Stella's older sister, Blanche, and her husband, Mike Moritz, to care for her at their farm home. During her formative years, she was fortunate to have two supportive families, Blanche and Mike and Tom and Gen (stepmother) and four younger McCracken siblings. Joan's brothers and sisters all married, and provided her with 13 nieces and nephews, who have more than doubled the next generation and live in many different states. She worked at a variety of occupations, including clerking at Arnot's Hardware, serving as a waitress in Riley's Confectionery, as a telephone operator and as a lifeguard. Joan also helped on "the farm." She especially enjoyed driving truck during harvest but less glamorous responsibilities were butchering chickens, weeding the garden, milking cows and preserving fruits and vegetables. No matter the task, she always had a feeling of great accomplishment when finished. Joan attended grade and high school in Conrad. She went on to enroll at Montana State College in Bozeman, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, and later, obtained a Master of Science degree in 1955. Her 40 years teaching experience included Libby, Helena and Polson, where she initiated the girl's track and field program. Joan received a Master of Education degree from the University of Montana in counseling and guidance. She moved to Missoula in 1975. She was a counselor at Sentinel High School and transferred to Big Sky High School where she retired in 1991. During college, she joined Kappa Delta Sorority and was chapter president as a senior. Other activities included Spurs, Mortar Board, Women's Athletic Association and annual staff. Later Joan received life memberships in MEA-R, NEA-R, Montana State Alumni Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (a teacher's honorary), BPOE, Montana Retired Teachers, and Fortnightly Book Club of Helena. Joan supported scholarship programs for Dollars for Scholars, Conrad High School, Montana State University Foundation, Kappa Delta Sorority Foundations, Lewis and Clark Retired Teachers and BPOE. She found enriching serving as a Fulbright exchange teacher at Wallsend-on-Tyne Grammar School, Northumberland County, England, in 1960-61. It enabled her to attend the Olympic Games in Rome as well as to explore Europe, Libya, Egypt, and Greece. Joan had always been a "people person," so frequent travels were no surprise to family and friends. Adventures took her to all seven continents. Foreign and domestic exchanges were enjoyed through Friendship Force International. This organization was founded by President Jimmy Carter. It is an effort to acquaint people with each other, by living with a family for a week, sharing their meals and home life. The aim is to promote peace in the world. Her visits included folks from Siberia, Australia, England, New Zealand, Germany, Sweden, Kentucky and Louisiana. After retiring, she purchased a comfortable home in Helena. Joan continued to travel and enjoyed friends and the varied organizations of the Capital city. She never allowed her physical limitations to stop her from her enjoyment of her friends and family, from weekly pinochle games to attending Lady Bobcat games. She was always interested in everything and everyone. We are all better for having known her. She was very thankful that both sets of her grandparents moved to Montana in 1909, enabling her to grow up in a small, rural community where family and friends are so influential. Young farm people learn useful ethics and the will to succeed. She was so grateful for the basic college education her father provided so that she could support herself. Survivors include sisters, Ellen (George) Nelson of Ramsey and Rita (Tom) Jones of Polson; sister-in-law, Nadeen McCracken of Conrad; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
