Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 26, 2020 at First United Methodist Church in Boone. Joan was born on November 6, 1934 to Clarence and Pauline (Schrader) Logsdon in Des Moines. At the beginning of her high school career, Joan moved to Boone where she met LeRoy Hamilton who later asked her to prom on the steps of the First United Methodist Church. Joan and LeRoy were high school sweethearts, married for nearly 65 years. Joan graduated for Boone High School in 1952. She attended DMACC for a year before completing her bachelor’s degree at Buena Vista University. Her passion in life was teaching where she helped hundreds of students over her 30 year career. Joan retired from Franklin Elementary School dedicating 29 years to the youth of Boone. While there, she developed a reading program and served on several boards and committees for the school and district. Joan was united in marriage with LeRoy Hamilton on July 24, 1955 at First United Methodist Church in Boone. They raised two children and traveled the world, exploring all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Russia, and Africa. Whenever in a new area, Joan insisted on visiting museums and historical sites along with embracing the local cultures. Joan was an active volunteer at the Mamie Eisenhower Museum in Boone for 27 years where she dedicated countless hours of service. In 2015, Joan received the Governor’s Award for Volunteerism. She was very patriotic. Joan also enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, sewing, and playing Bridge among many other card and board games. Joan was a member of multiple organizations, serving on committees for First United Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma, Jaycee Jaynes, Boone Education Association, and Campfire where she was a leader and counselor known as Ms. Loggy. Joan is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, LeRoy Hamilton of Boone; children, Debbie (Rod) Potter of Des Moines and Scott (Carol) Hamilton of Ames; grandchildren, Rodney Potter, Paul (Tara Yarges) Potter, Garrett (Shannon) Hamilton, and Allison (Taylor) Fox; six great-grandchildren with a seventh to arrive in October; brother, Jeff (Carolin) Logsdon of Leipzig, Germany; and many other loving relatives. She is preceded in death by her father and step-mother, Clarence and Celia Logsdon; mother, Pauline Logsdon; and brothers, Michael Logsdon and Thomas Logsdon. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone.
