Description	:	Joann Spitler, of Richmond, passed away Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018, three days before her 86th birthday. Joann was born on Dec. 11, 1932, in Harrisonburg, daughter of Katherine Menefee Spitler and Dr. J. Vincent Spitler. She is survived by her brother, Joseph V. Spitler Jr.; many cousins; nieces, Kathy Spitler, Kara Spitler, Kris King and Kim Rivera; and nephew Dan Spitler. She was preceded in death by her parents and her dear companion of many years, Mary Alice Brown. Joann was born on Dec. 11, 1932, in Harrisonburg, daughter of Katherine Menefee Spitler and Dr. J. Vincent Spitler. She is survived by her brother, Joseph V. Spitler Jr.; many cousins; nieces, Kathy Spitler, Kara Spitler, Kris King and Kim Rivera; and nephew Dan Spitler. She was preceded in death by her parents and her dear companion of many years, Mary Alice Brown. In the late ‘40s, Joann and her classmates at Luray Elementary had the distinction, though perhaps not the pleasure, of attending the first eighth-grade class after the Great Depression. She was voted most dependable in her class and graduated from Luray High School in 1951 and in 1955 from William and Mary with a degree in business. Joann received her master’s degree from the University of Richmond and was working on her doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University when interrupted by family matters. Joann worked for Life of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University, living in Richmond her entire adult life and after her retirement. Joann and Mary Alice traveled often to Vermont for the autumn colors and to the Holy Land with their friends from the First Baptist Church of Richmond, where she was a steadfast member and Sunday school teacher. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 18, from 2 to 3 p.m., receiving family and friends at 1 p.m., at the Bradley Funeral Home in Luray. Burial will follow at Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery.
