JoAnn VonWald, daughter of Donald and Ruth (Story) VonWald, was born on September 28, 1943, in Seattle, WA. At a young age she moved to Aberdeen, SD where she graduated from Aberdeen Central High School and attended Northern State University. JoAnn worked for Northwestern Public Service where she met Eugene Tagtow. JoAnn was united in marriage with Eugene on July 2, 1966, in Aberdeen, SD. The couple moved to Huron, SD, in 1968, where she raised her family and enjoyed being a homemaker. JoAnn was a member of First united Methodist Church in Huron, SD, and the Women's Circle for over 30 years. After moving to Sioux Falls in 2009, she became a member of Sunnycrest United Methodist Church. JoAnn was a proud member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Torch Bearer Gamma Chapter for over 50 years. She also was active in several bridge clubs and quilting guilds. JoAnn enjoyed traveling with her friends and family, taking multiple bus and car trips over the years. Through these activities she established many close friendships. During JoAnn's free time, she thoroughly enjoyed quilting. She made numerous blankets, table runners, placemats, wall hangings, doll clothes and even the occasional hemming. Her creativity received multiple ribbons at the South Dakota State Fair. During quiet time she was an avid reader. Even after the diagnosis, JoAnn was positive and uplifting. Getting friends and family together for socializing was important. Living through and hosting Christmas 2018 was her last goal and cherished moment. She was the glue that kept the family together and will forever be missed during these family celebrations. Grateful for having shared her life are husband Eugene Tagtow, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter Denice Houlette, her husband Chris, and their sons Justin and Brayden, Pierre, SD; Gary Tagtow, his wife Rhonda, and their daughters Alyssa, Sydney, and Avery, Sioux Falls, SD; Robert Tagtow, his wife Kristal, and their daughter Ainsley, Sioux Falls, SD; brother Donald VonWald Jr. and his wife Carole, Otsega, MN; sister Linda Ringgenberg and her husband Glenn, Columbia, SD; brother James VonWald Vancouver, WA; sister-in-law Zoule VonWald, Bloomington, MN; and many other relatives and friends. JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Robert. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of the Sanford oncology staff for their excellent care and friendship. The team found a way to make life enjoyable during the most difficult times. It is requested that memorials be directed to the Leukemia Research Foundation with hope that future lives can be saved from this painful disease. Visitation with the family present will be from 4 to 6 pm on Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at the Miller Westside Chapel, 6200 West 41st Street. A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at the Miller Westside Chapel with burial at the Riverview Cemetery in Chamberlain, SD. - Miller Funeral Home
