Joanne died April 19, 2014 at Jamestown Regional Medical Center in Jamestown, ND. Joanne E. Brokaw, daughter of Lloyd and Ann (Sjerven) Brokaw was born September 15, 1935 on the family homestead in Day County, SD in a family of seven, Joanne, being the youngest. In 1946 the family moved to the Forbes area where she attended country schools the first six years. She then attended Forbes School and graduated from Forbes High School with the class of 1953. She furthered her education at Normal Industrial School in Ellendale. Joanne taught in a country school in Albertha #3. She was united in marriage to Paul D. Merkel on November 26, 1955 in St. Helena's Catholic Church at Ellendale. They lived in Aberdeen for a couple of years. In the spring of 1957 they returned to the Forbes area. In 1959 they purchased a farm 11 miles west of Ellendale where they raised cattle, hogs and small grains. Paul and Joanne retired from farming in 1997 but remained on the farm. Joanne loved embroidery, dancing, baking, canning, sewing, cryptoquip puzzles and gardening. She liked to run the tractor while unloading grain and raise livestock. Joanne and Paul had a love of fishing the last few years before Paul died. They would load the boat up and off to different lakes they would go with lunch. Joanne cherished every moment she spent with her grandchildren at the farm. Joanne worked at the Dickey County Treasurer Office, substitute taught at Barnard and Frederick, SD; Ashley and Forbes, ND schools. She served on the Dickey County Social Services Board; Dickey County Health Board; a board member of South Central Child Support & Enforcement Unit of Jamestown; South Central Human Advisory Council of Jamestown; member of American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries and a former member of Forbes Homemakers Club and past 4-H Leader for a couple of years. Joanne was a member of St. Helena's Catholic Church and St. Helena's Altar Society. Joanne is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (Mark) Wolf and Gayle (Rich) Olson; two sons, Brad (Carol) Merkel and Mike Merkel; one sister, Lucille Meyer; one brother, Leslie (Geraldine) Brokaw; one sister-in-law, Joanne Brokaw; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband (1-25-2011); three sisters, Dorothy, Marion and Elizabeth and one brother, James. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ellendale has been entrusted with the arrangements.
