Description	:	Joaquina was born in Maderia, the daughter of Jacinta and Miguel Gomez. Her father was a stone mason and she was educated - could read and write. Her sister, Antonia had been married to Manuel Gonçalves but had died and Joaquina then married him and gave birth to eleven children. Her sons: Maximillan, Frank, Manuel, and Miguel died before the family left by sea to Hawaii. An illness (either small pox or measles) spread after the ship stopped at Azores and many died, including two of her babies: John and Adelaide. Her daughters Christina, Mary, and... Her sister, Antonia had been married to Manuel Gonçalves but had died and Joaquina then married him and gave birth to eleven children. Her sons: Maximillan, Frank, Manuel, and Miguel died before the family left by sea to Hawaii. Two more daughters, Virginia and Elizabeth, were born in Hawaii, while the family worked for Sprekles Sugar Plantation. Christina married Manuel Correia in 1888 and left Hawaii for the mainland ... to Washington Territory which was about to become a state. New land was available and the promise of homestead was appealing to the young couple. Daughter Mary married Manuel Braz and remained in Hawaii when the Gonçalves family (Manuel, Joaquina and daughters Isabel, Virginia, and Elizabeth) joined Christina and Manuel in Washington. They settled on a farm in Blyn Washington, and Joaquina and Manuel raised their children and watched the new grandchildren grow. Joachina became blind in her later years. She was 76 at time of death.
