Read More	Gaffney, S.C. - Joe Dean Spencer, 87, of 421 Misty Lane, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. He was the husband of Florence Blackwood Spencer. Born in Cherokee County on August 9, 1925, he was a son of the late James Ben Spencer and Sally White Spencer. Mr. Spencer retired from the City of Gaffney Fire Department where he served as Assistant Fire Chief. He was also a self-employed paint contractor. A 1942 graduate of Gaffney High School, Mr. Spencer was a Mason and a Shriner. He served as a Cherokee County School Trustee for more than 20 years and was an avid fan of the Gaffney Indians and South Carolina Gamecocks. Mr. Spencer was a Christian and a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church where he formerly served as a deacon. In addition to his wife, Mr. Spencer is survived by a daughter, Vickie Spencer Phillips (Tommy); a son, J. Richard Spencer (Kay); three stepdaughters, Susan Blackwood Spearman (Danny), Mary Blackwood Starnes, and Martha Blackwood Shaw (Jerry); six grandchildren, David Phillips (Missy), Salli Petty (Michael), Mark Phillips (Erica), Anne Carnes (Brandan) Kim Spencer, Jonathan Spencer; a step-granddaughter, Jennifer Spearman Swanner (Ryan); eight great-grandchildren, Kate Phillips, Anna Grace Phillips, Madalynne Phillips, Andrew Petty, Alice Petty, Emily Petty, Connor Phillips and Blakeley Carnes. Mr. Spencer was first married to the late Alice Kimsey Spencer. He was predeceased by one brother, J. D. Spencer; two sisters, Daisy Spencer Neal and Ruby Spencer Gregory. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at Blakely Funeral Home in Gaffney, S.C. Funeral services will be held immediately following visitation in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Dr. Clyde Thomas, Rev. Stuart A. Kersey and Lt. Col. Dick Norris. Interment will be at Frederick Memorial Gardens following the service. Memorials may be made to: Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1449, Gaffney, S.C. 29342 or to the charity of one's choice.
