He was born May 6, 1927, in Switzerland County, the son of Leonard A. and Alma Rayles Ricketts. He was raised in Switzerland County and was a 1945 graduate of Patriot High School. For his service he received the World War II Victory Medal. He continued to serve... Read More	Joe Edward Ricketts, 82, of Vevay, died Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, at King's Daughters' Hospital. He was born May 6, 1927, in Switzerland County, the son of Leonard A. and Alma Rayles Ricketts. He was raised in Switzerland County and was a 1945 graduate of Patriot High School. He served in the Navy from July 24, 1945 to July 20, 1946, rising to the rank of Seaman Second Class. He served during World War II aboard the NTS, Sampson, New York and the USS North Carolina. For his service he received the World War II Victory Medal. He continued to serve in the Navy Reserves until July 20, 1954. He began his employment as a lab technician with Schenley Distilleries in Lawrenceburg. In 1949 he enrolled in Foegler's Watchmaker's School in Cincinnati, Ohio. After graduation, he was employed with a jeweler in Aurora. He then returned to Vevay and was employed at Sieglitz Jewelry. On Jan. 1, 1952, he and his fiancee opened the Rickett's Jewelry Store on Main Street in Vevay. In 1959 they moved the jewelry business to its current location. In 1957, HE took over the State Farm Insurance Agency in Vevay. He operated the business for 32 years until passing it to his daughter on Sept. 30, 1989. He was an active leader in his community. In 1963 he was chairman of the Sesquicentennial, which began as the formation of the Wine Festival. He was a charter member of the Switzerland County Chamber of Commerce, serving as past president and receiving the Paul Ogle Community Service Award. He was instrumental with getting the area businessmen together to raise funds to purchase land to build the Randall Textron Plant in Vevay. He was also instrumental in starting the local emergency unit in Switzerland County. He was the former president of the board at the First National Bank in Vevay. He served on the board of the Samaritan Foundation in Indianapolis. When the need arose for senior housing in Switzerland County, he became a member of the Switzerland County Housing and served as its president, retiring after 35 years of service. He was past president of Kiwanis Club of Vevay. He was a charter member of the Vevay Jaycees. He was a member of the Indiana Watchmakers Association, Florence Lodge 27 F & AM, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, the Murat Shrine of Indianapolis, the Vevay American Legion Post 185 and the Vevay Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5396, where he served on the honor guard. He was a member of the Switzerland Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne Ford Ricketts, whom he married Jan. 3, 1953; one daughter, Jennifer Scudder of Florence; one son, Randy Ricketts of Vevay; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Lee Ricketts, who died Feb. 26, 2005; his parents; and four brothers, Donald Ricketts, George Ricketts, Norman Ricketts and Herman L. Ricketts. The funeral was at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home. Burial was in Vevay Cemetery. Full military honors was conducted graveside by the Vevay American Legion Post 185 and the Vevay Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5396. Madison Courier 12/16/09
