Gordon Bruce and Vicar Jesse Baker officiating. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Norfolk. Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk is in charge of the arrangements. Joe was born on February 27, 1935, the son of Joe and Margaret (Voss) Hegr. He was born at home on the family farm, located east of Madison NE. As a child he attended the rural schools at Madison County, district #6, and Stanton County, district #20. He remained on the family farm until entering the armed services, Army branch, on December 20, 1955, where he served full time and in the reserves until being honorably discharged on December 19, 1961. He returned to farming after his full time military service. Joe married Vlanda Biddlecome on December 20, 1959, and they had two children together, David and Mike. He was always a farmer at heart, but sadly had to sell out, leaving the business permanently in December of 1964. He and his family moved to Ewing, NE, where he took jobs transporting cream, eggs, and dairy products for local companies. Then the family moved to Leigh, NE in October of 1966. Over the next 12 years Joe took various jobs as a gas station attendant and construction worker for local businesses, a factory worker in Columbus Ne, and a road construction worker, before making truck driving his new long term occupation. He hauled for a local company for a year, before getting a job as an irrigation system transport driver for Lindsay Manufacturing Co. He would drive for Lindsay for the next 10 years. Joe became divorced from his first wife on November 4, 1985, and moved to Norfolk. Then on April 25, 1987 he married Barbara (Jackson) Planer. He continued to drive truck for Lindsay Manufacturing, then for Central Transport in Norfolk, NE, then for Norfolk Rendering, before finally retiring on June 14, 1997. He continued to work part-time locally as carpenter, plumber, and general handyman. Joe was quite well known, not only for his hard work ethic, but also for his musical ability. He played the accordion, and used an old fashioned Bohemian Button Accordion from the age of 11 on. He played and sang in several small Polka bands, including a small combo he formed while living in Leigh. He was even in a local Country music band once. He would play at barn dances, weddings, parties, taverns, any place that welcomed polkas, waltzes, and old time music. He played for a number of years, but finally had to give it up for his work as a long haul truck driver. In addition to family activities, his other hobbies were hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and of course, Husker football. Joe is survived by: his wife Barbara, his sister Joann Brewer, his sister-in-law Jackie Marshall, his sister-in-law Beverly Hill, his brother-in-law Randy Jackson, his son David and wife Loree, his son Mike and wife Annie, his step-daughter VerJean Lippman and husband Ron, his step-daughter Brinda Weinrich and husband Tim, his step-son Brian Planer, as well as 4 additional step-children and their accompanying spouses. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and 14 step-great grandchildren. Pallbearers for the funeral service are: Jaramie Lippman, Mike Weinrich, Tim Weinrich, Dean Brewer, Cliff Brewer, and Micah Smith.
