Horstman was born November 13, 1901, In Deventer, The Netherlands, the son of Gerrit and Eva Dina (Denekamp) Horstman. He married Reka Hulstein on February 17, 1926, in Sioux Center. The couple farmed near Sioux Center, Carmel and Orange City until his retirement in 1964. The couple moved to Sioux Center, where he was employed with Hoogland Plumbing for a few years. His wife died in 1985. He lived in the New Homestead in Sioux Center before moving to the Nursing Home in 1996. He was a member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. He had served as a deacon at Carmel Reformed Church and as an elder at First Reformed Church in Orange City. Survivors include two sons and their wives, Gerrit and Ruth and William and Gertrude, all of Sioux Center; one daughter and her husband, Evelyn Shirley and Leon Koele of Sheldon; a sister, Gertrude Jensen of McCook, Nebraska; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Gerrit E. Horstman of Sanborn: 13 grandchildren; and 27 greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers (John, Everett and Gerrit), two sisters (Grace and Anna), five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Sioux Center News 1996-12-31.
