Carden, LaFollette attorney and businessman, who died Monday in an Oak Ridge Hospital after a long illness. He was 68. Mr. Carden served as a Second Division chancellor for 11 years until sickness caused his retirement in 1958. Previously he had been LaFollette city attorney from 1932 to 1942; attorney for the LaFollette Board of Public Utilities from 1940 to 1948; and from 1942 to 1946 was assistant district attorney of the 19th Judicial Circuit, serving under Howard Baker, Sr., later Second District Congressman. Mr. Carden was elected chancellor in 1948 and served until April 1959 when he resigned. A.G. Shumate of Tazewell was appointed to succeed him. Judge Carden was a graduate of the University of Tennessee. He was an automobile dealer for a number of years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of LaFollette, the Exchange Club, and the American Legion, and was a Mason and a Shriner. He was long active in the Republican Party. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Summitt Carden; a daughter, Mrs. George Morse, the former Janet Carden, of Newport News, Virgina; two sons, Joe Carden, Jr. and Robert L. Carden, both of LaFollette; eight grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. U.S. Carden of LaFollette; and three sisters, Mrs. James B. Summitt of LaFollette, Mrs. William Bowling of Knoxville, and Miss Marie Carden of LaFollette. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the First Baptist Church. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Walters Funeral Home of LaFollette was in charge.
