Description	:	Joel McKellar Duke, 91, of St. Matthews, passed away August 27, 2018. He was the husband of Bess DuRelle Brown Duke. Joel was born February 10, 1927, the son of the late Benjamin Flovia Duke and Hettie Cassandra Henderson. He graduated with a BS from Newberry College. Read More	Joel McKellar Duke, 91, of St. Matthews, passed away August 27, 2018. He was the husband of Bess DuRelle Brown Duke. Joel was born February 10, 1927, the son of the late Benjamin Flovia Duke and Hettie Cassandra Henderson. He graduated with a BS from Newberry College. He served in the United States Coast Guard division of the Navy during World War II. He was a seed salesman with Columbiana Seed, Jacques Seed, and Wannamaker Seed. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, St. Matthews Rotary Club, and Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce. He started his working career as a teacher of Math and Science. He was also a high school football and basketball coach. Later, he became Superintendent of Dorchester County Schools. Survivors include: his wife of 69 years, Bess; two daughters, Lynn Duke Sprinkle (Larry), of Columbia, and Beverly Duke Herndon (Irvan), of St. Matthews; a daughter-in-law, Betsy Duke, of Swansea; five grandchildren, Jason Leopold (Krista), India Gregory (Richard), Joel M. Duke, III, Brantley Sprinkle, Benjamin Duke (Morgan), and Connor Sprinkle; and five great-grandchildren, Reagan, Brandt, Jacob, Brian, and Pearl. He was predeceased by a son, Joel M. Duke, Jr. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, St. Matthews, with the Rev. Sarah Relaford officiating. Honored to serve as Pallbearers will be his grandsons. The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to: St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1808 Bridge Street, St. Matthews, SC 29135. Dukes Harley Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
