Description	:	VIRGINIA ROOTS Joel was born the son of Shadrack Richards and Susannah Hamilton in Franklin County VA. Joel's grandfather, Edward Richards, moved from Hampstead Maryland with his father Benjamin Richards in 1755. Edward established a 1,000+ acre plantation south of Rocky Mount VA north of Chestnut Creek. MARRIAGE Joel married Lucy Warren, daughter of Elijah Warren, on 24 December 1812 in Franklin County VA. [1825] +Lewis Bondurant DEATH OF A FATHER From his father Shadrack's will, probated August 1827: "I do give unto my son Joel Richards a tract of land adjoining the land of James Calloway and others, whereon Nancy Whitlow now lives, containing 45 acres, to him and his heirs forever." Joel and his brother David Richards [1797] were executors of their father's estate. 1830 census Franklin County VA Joel & family lived "next door" to his brother David Richards [1797]. THE LONG MOVE WEST Shortly thereafter, Joel packed up his family and sister Elizabeth "Betsey" Richards and made the long, long journey to Missouri [612 straight-line miles!]. He settled land between, and just a bit north, of present day Foristell [laid out 1836] and Wentzville [laid out 1855] in Cuivre Township, St. Charles County. His cousin, Charles Edward Richards [1805] VA, son of Waitman Richards [1765] VA, also moved about this time [perhaps the same time] with his future bride, Louisa Mitchell Eddens. They settled a short distance away near Flint Hill MO. 1840 census Cuivre Twsp St. Charles Co MO. Richards, 33, and wife Sarah A. w/no children David H. Richards, 31, and wife Mary C. w/a son Joel E., 2 months old. From the Richards Farm Cemetery transcriber: "Her account says this is the burial ground of Joel and Lucy Richards who came to Missouri from Rocky Mount, Franklin County, Virginia, in wagons, bringing 30 slaves with them. In 1933 this farm was said to have been held by one family longer than any other farm in the county -- over 100 years. The slaves' burying ground was located north of the house." HONORING SERVANTS/SLAVES If I knew the names of the slaves who have been laid to rest in that cemetery I would make a memorial for each one. As it is, I must leave it in God's gracious care, and He cares for them.
