Description	:	Joel Spencer Linville was born February 14, 1847, near Graham, MO, the son of William Isom and Bethany Hedgpeth Linville. As a boy he was active in Sunday School and one July 28, 1857 wrote this account of the attendance-"Sabbath school met pursuant to adjournment. Opened with singing and prayer by Rev. H.H. Craig. They were not quite so many scholars present as usual. Lessons were tolerably well recited. Read More	Joel Spencer Linville was born February 14, 1847, near Graham, MO, the son of William Isom and Bethany Hedgpeth Linville. As a boy he was active in Sunday School and one July 28, 1857 wrote this account of the attendance-"Sabbath school met pursuant to adjournment. Opened with singing and prayer by Rev. H.H. Craig. They were not quite so many scholars present as usual. Lessons were tolerably well recited. The behavior of the children was good with the exception of two or three little boys whose conduct was unbecoming but hope they will learn better ere long. Previous to the opening of Sunday School there was some talk concerning law suits and other things. Upon the whole there seemed not to be that interest in Sunday School that it's importance demands but everything has to have a beginning. The school presents that aspect which inspires our hearts with hope that there is a better day a coming for Bethel Church." During the Civil War, he was a member of the Home Guard stationed in Nodaway County. On June 17, 1866, he married Rose Dyson, who died on November 12, 1873. Their daughter, Hattie, was born on June 30, 1870 and died on September 18, 1874. Joe Spencer Linville was a member of the Masonic Lodge, joining on October 15, 1889. After the death of his first wife, he moved to Roseburg, Oregon, where in 1875 he married Rose Hedgpeth. In 1880, he moved his family back to Graham. Later they moved to a farm a half mile northeast of Skidmore. Later on moved into the town of Skidmore, where he made his home with his daughter, Maude Linville. He died on July 31, 1938. He was preceded in death by his wife, who died in 1907. Joel Spencer and Rose Hedgpeth Linville had four daughters, Miss Maude Linville, who taught school in the Skidmore school district for 54 years, Ethyl (Tom) Young, who had two children, Cecil (Willard) Money, who had two daughters, and Bernice (George) Knepper.
