Joel Roberts, age 79 years, one of the pioneer citizens of Madison County, died Sunday (June 26, 1921) at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. D. Jackson, near Aurora, a complication of stomach and kidney troubles being the cause. His remains were interred in the Aurora Cemetery, the funeral services being conducted by Joe A. Jackson, assisted by W. C. Cluck, L. E. Parker and W. A. Harrison. Uncle Joe, as he was familiarly known throughout the country, was a native of Platte County, Missouri. He came to Madison County in 1860 and resided here continuously until his death, except during the Civil War in which he served as a Confederate Soldier. About the close of the war he became a minister in the Church of Christ and was active in that work until a short time ago. In addition to his ministerial life, he pursued occupations of blacksmithing, farming and merchandising and by industry had laid by a competency for old age. Uncle Joel was a man whom everybody highly esteemed for his qualities of good citizenship and Christian character and his death has caused sorrow in the hearts of a large circle of friends. He is survived by a brother, Jacob Roberts of Amarillo, Texas, a sister Mrs. Robbinson of Slocum, Arkansas and the following named children; Mrs. Onetha Mix, Japton, Arkansas, Mrs. W. D. Jackson, Aurora; Mrs. H. L. Ledbetter, Clifty; Mrs. Lydia Neal, Combs, Mrs. Ruth Duncan, Mission, Texas; Mrs. Kima Tomkins and G. N. Roberts, San Bernardino, California.
