Paul worked in a foundry in Worcester, but his health became so poor that he wanted to escape to a farming life. They first lived in Carver, maybe in the late teens. They then moved to the Gardner area to a dairy farm and came back to Carver about the mid-twenties. Paul worked for Ed Washburn who was in charge of a lot of bog properties: Waterville Bogs, Manomet Cranberry big bog, and East Taunton Bogs. After working there, he built and renovated bogs for many different growers. Also in the early thirties, Paul worked on the Bourne Bridge above the Cape Cod Canal. During World War II, he was in the Home Guard and served as an air raid warden. Paul died suddenly of a heart attack at age 55. He was so proud of his World War II service in the Massachusetts home guard and as an air raid warden that taps were played at his funeral.
