Was 84 Years of age and had lived here more than fifty years- A weel known citizen. Chris. Benkert passed away Friday morning at 3 o'clock at the home of his son in Mediapolis. Cause of death was the burden of the years. The old man was one of the widely known and highly respected pioneers, to whom the state owes more than the present generation can realize. He was honest as the day was long, industrious and lawabiding, a good citizen in the very best sense of the word. Chris. Benkert was 84 years of age. His home was in Saxe-Meinigan, but for more than fifty four years he has been a good, loyal citizen of the republic, coming to Burlington in 1851. He was a wagonmaker by trade and found plenty of work in this city, where he lived until 1871, when he removed to Mediaplois, where he continued to make his home til the end, payingocaational visits to the city and renewing old friendships and acquantances. Mrs. Benkert preceded the aged husband to the better land some four or five years ago. Of the seven sons, who mourn the good father, but two reside in Des Moines county. The funeral will take place monday afternoon at 9:30 o'clock from the residence of Mr. Fred Benkert at Mediapolis. There will be services at the church at Franklin Mills and the remains will be laid to rest in the Aspen Grove cemetery.
